Deafway Residential Care
Deafway's residential care service is registered for 34 residents who are deaf sign language users.
We are one of only a handful of specialist care providers nationally, offering accessible care and support to deaf people with complex care needs. Our residents come from all areas of the UK, are aged 18 plus and have a diverse range of conditions including learning difficulties, autism, dementia, mental health and personality disorders. Our service is accessible for people in wheelchairs and some rooms are en suite.
We pride ourselves on offering person-centred support, in an environment which meets the sensory needs of deaf people, including flashing doorbells and smoke alarms, room loops and accessible information. All staff are expected to achieve level 2 in British Sign Language or be working towards it. A significant number of our workforce are themselves deaf or hard of hearing.
Accommodation is across six houses which enables small groups with similar profiles to be housed appropriately. One house is fully adapted, all ground floor with wet rooms and adjustable worktops in the kitchen. Another houses young male residents, another older residents and a couple of houses are smaller for people with more challenging behaviours.
Residents at Deafway benefit from daily activities. Sessions include cooking, budgeting, basic English, crafts, weekly swimming, gardening and bird watching. Deafway has a wide range of facilities on site, including a restaurant, community hub, sensory rooms, sports hall, outdoor gym and communal gardens including outside seating areas, bird hide and orchard.
